and anti-american violence overseas there is late word tonight that the fbi has exposed an apparent homegrown terror plot in chicago involving an american teenager. the feds arresting an 18-year-old man who they say tried to detonate a car bomb outside a chicago bar. what he apparently didn't know was that the fbi was in on it from the start and the bomb was a fake. nbc's john yang is in our chicago newsroom with more. was anyone put at risk here? >> reporter: law enforcement officials stressed to nbc news that no one was ever at risk. the bomb was a phony. the suspect, 18-year-old adel daoud had no weapons training, no explosives training and is not a member or connected with any terrorist group, international terrorist group. according to this 35-page criminal complaint he was spotted by the fbi online talking jihad and talking about attacking americans. an undercover fbi agent got in touch with him. in the course of their discussions he came up with this plot to attack a target in chicago. and last night, according to the fbi, he was given a phony bomb, drove it in a jeep cheroke

:14. did mysterious hackers tap into an fbi file? is the fbi tracking your ipad? >> hackers associated with the group anonymous posted special identification numbers recently, sort of like serial numbers for apple products, not uncommon. in fact, these numbers called udids have bedevilled apple. they've been a security problem since the first issue of the first ipad. but it's where the hackers say they got those numbers that's peculiar. they say they got them from an fbi laptop which would lead one to ask why does the fbi have my apple ipad information? the fbi this morning absolutely denies the accusation. posting to twitter, we never had the info in question. bottom line, totally false. now, if someone has your unique apple identifier, it's really nothing to lose sleep over. the big question is where the data came from. if not the fbi, is there not a popular app out there leaking the number? the hacker group promised to release more information a blogger by the name of adrian chen dressed up in a ballet tu tu and put a shoe on his head. we'll keep you updated and see if that did him

from the fbi and the atf are expected to join this investigation some time tomorrow. when vallejo mayor osby davis saw the magnitude of the damage to the law office he shares with michael thompson, the mayor couldn't help but shed a few tears. davis later told the vallejo times herald to say he is upset would be an understatement. the fire was reported at about 1:30 saturday morning at the small office building on tuolumne street across from the solano superior court. investigators think someone set the fire intentionally. >> a suspicious fire at this time, it's under investigation and we hopefully have some more information in the coming days as to the cause of the fire. >> reporter: vallejo police say the same building has been targeted by vandals in the past few months, who have thrown rocks through windows. and while investigators search for a motive for the fire, they say they are now looking at all the possibilities, including if mayor davis has any political enemies who would want to target him. >> well, the fact that it involves the mayor of vallejo, the fact that he is a high p

information we have at present. first of all, there's an fbi investigation that's ongoing. and we look to that investigation to give us the definitive word as to what transpyred. but putting together the best information we have available to us today, our current assessment is that what happened in benghazi in fact was initially a spontaneous reaction to what transpired hours before in cairo, almost a copycat of the demonstrations against our facility in cairo which were prompted of course by the video. >> there was a caveat there. she said the fbi was still investigating. but the thought was it was a spontaneous reaction. a couple of days before that, the libyan president said, no, in fact, al qaeda was behind this attack. and then days later, after ambassador rice is on this program and other programs, the president's spokesman jay carney says this. it is, i think, self-evident that what happened in benghazi was a terrorist attack. well, if it was self-evident, why didn't the president call this exactly what it was, an act of terror on the anniversary of 9/11? >> well, this is an eve
